White-lined sphinx moth caterpillar (likely)

Found in gardens, grasslands, deserts, woodland edges, and around outdoor lights across much of North America.

Larvae chew leaves of many plants, including evening primrose, grape, willowherb, and purslane; adults feed on flower nectar.

Caterpillars are active mostly at night and may wander conspicuously while seeking a pupation site. They pupate underground; adults are strong, hovering moths that can produce multiple generations in warm regions.

Generally harmless to people; the small horn is nonvenomous and not a stinger. Larvae can defoliate individual plants, but adults pollinate flowers and the species is an important food source for wildlife.
