Diet & Feeding

Broadleaf plants and grasses including dandelions, plantain, clover, and birches.

Behavior Patterns

Active in late summer and fall; they curl into a tight ball when disturbed and hibernate as caterpillars over winter using a natural antifreeze (glycerol).

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans; hair can cause mild skin irritation for sensitive individuals. Ecologically important as part of the food web and for lore regarding winter weather prediction.
