Antlion (Larva), also known as a Doodlebug

Natural Habitat

Arid and sandy areas, often under ledges or porches where soil remains dry and loose.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous; primarily eats ants and other small ground-dwelling insects that fall into its pit.

Behavior Patterns

The larva digs funnel-shaped pits in loose sand to trap prey. It hides at the bottom with only its mandibles exposed, flicking sand to destabilize prey trying to escape. After a pupal stage in a silk-lined cocoon, it emerges as a winged adult resembling a dragonfly.

Risks & Benefits

Beneficial to the ecosystem as a natural pest control for ants and other small insects; they are harmless to humans and rarely bite unless handled roughly.
