Pill Bug (Woodlouse / Roly-poly)

Damp, dark places under rocks, logs, leaf litter, decaying wood, mulch, and soil, as they require moisture to breathe through gill-like structures.

Detritivore; feeds primarily on decaying plant matter, dead vegetation, leaves, fallen fruit, and occasionally young tender living plant roots or seedlings.

Nocturnal invertebrates that exhibit 'conglobation'—the ability to roll up into a tight ball when threatened or to retain moisture. They undergo molting in two stages (back half first, then front half).

Completely harmless to humans (no bite or sting). Highly beneficial to ecosystems as decomposers that enrich soil quality and break down organic waste, though large populations can occasionally damage delicate young garden seedlings.
