Larvae consume keratin-rich materials, including wool, fur, feathers, and hair; adults generally do not feed.

Adults are weak fliers and often hide in darkness. Larvae avoid light and can damage fabrics while developing in silken cases or webbing.

They are harmless to people and do not bite or transmit disease, but larvae can damage natural-fiber clothing and furnishings. Ecologically, they help decompose animal-derived fibers.
