Wolf spider

Ground-dwelling habitats such as grassland, woodland edges, gardens, leaf litter, and buildings. This individual appears photographed indoors or on fabric.

Predatory; hunts insects, other spiders, and small arthropods, usually by active pursuit rather than webs.

Mostly solitary and nocturnal, hiding under debris or in burrows by day. Females carry egg sacs and later spiderlings on their abdomen.

Generally harmless and nonaggressive; a bite may cause localized pain, redness, or swelling if handled. Beneficial predators that help control household and garden insects.
