Fungus gnat (probable)

Moist soil, potting mix, decaying plant material, and humid indoor areas; commonly seen near houseplants.

Larvae feed mainly on fungi, algae, and decaying organic matter in soil; some may nibble plant roots. Adults usually consume little, relying on stored energy or liquid nutrients.

Small adults fly weakly and are attracted to moisture and light, often appearing around plants or windows. Larvae develop in damp soil and can complete several generations annually indoors.

Generally harmless to people and pets; heavy infestations may damage seedlings or roots and indicate persistently wet soil. Larvae also contribute to decomposition and nutrient cycling.
