Homes, museums, and warehouses; adults occur near windows and other light sources, while larvae develop in dark areas containing lint or stored materials.

Larvae feed on animal-based materials such as wool, fur, feathers, and dead insects; adults feed mainly on pollen and nectar.

Adults are oval, dark, and hard-shelled. Larvae are bristly, develop over several months, and may leave shed skins behind.

Larvae can damage clothing, carpets, and other stored materials; they do not bite or pose a significant health risk.
