Louse fly (hippoboscid fly), likely a sheep ked

A wingless external parasite of sheep, especially in wool and on the skin; it is common in cool, temperate livestock regions.

Both sexes feed on the host’s blood, piercing skin with adapted mouthparts.

Adults crawl through wool rather than fly and remain on one host for most of their lives. Females produce a single mature larva at a time, which is deposited and develops into a hardened puparium.

Can cause irritation, wool damage, anemia, and transmit some livestock pathogens. It has no meaningful human benefit and is primarily a veterinary pest.
