Trees and wooded areas, spending most of their lives underground as nymphs.

Xylem fluid from plant roots as nymphs, and tree sap as adults using piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Nymphs live underground for years (ranging from 1 to 17 years depending on the species). Upon emerging as adults, they climb trees, molt, and males produce loud mating calls by vibrating specialized abdominal membranes called tymbals.

Generally harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting. Large populations can cause minor damage to young trees or branches when females slit bark to lay eggs, but they also serve as a vital food source for many predators and help aerate the soil when nymphs emerge.
