Larvae live in water films or slime layers, breathing through a small tube; they pupate near the surface of the organic film before emerging as fuzzy, moth-like adults.

Non-biting and generally harmless to humans, but their presence indicates a buildup of organic sludge; they can occasionally transport bacteria from drains to food surfaces.
