Orb-weaver spider (likely spotted orb-weaver)

Woodlands, gardens, shrubs, and vegetation near buildings, especially in temperate regions. It commonly builds webs in open spaces between branches.

A carnivore that captures flying insects—including moths, flies, beetles, and mosquitoes—in a sticky orb web. It bites and externally digests prey before feeding.

Usually constructs a fresh circular web at dusk and hides nearby or consumes it at dawn. Adults are most visible in late summer and autumn; females produce egg sacs and die after reproduction in many temperate populations.

Generally harmless to people, with bites uncommon and medically insignificant. It is beneficial because it controls numerous flying insect pests.
