Natural Habitat
Coarse human body hair, primarily in the pubic region, but also eyelashes, eyebrows, armpits, or chests.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate ectoparasite; feeds exclusively on human blood several times a day.
Behavior Patterns
Slow-moving; attaches firmly to hair shafts with specialized claws. They cannot jump or fly and are usually transmitted through close physical contact.
Risks & Benefits
Causes intense itching (pruritus) due to an allergic reaction to saliva; can lead to secondary skin infections from scratching. No known benefits; strictly a parasite.
