Cicada

Trees and shrubs in forests, gardens, and other wooded areas; immature cicadas live underground near tree roots.

Nymphs suck fluids from tree roots; adults feed on xylem sap from stems and branches.

Nymphs spend years underground before emerging, molting, and becoming winged adults. Males of many species produce loud mating calls.

Harmless to people and pets; heavy egg-laying can sometimes damage young twigs. Cicadas provide food for wildlife and help cycle nutrients.
