Obligate hematophages, meaning they feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals, primarily humans.

Nocturnal insects that emerge at night to feed. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult) and can survive several months without a meal.

While they are not known to transmit diseases, their bites can cause allergic reactions, intense itching, and secondary skin infections from scratching. They are significant urban pests and cause psychological distress.
