Red admiral butterfly

Gardens, woodland edges, parks, meadows, and urban areas, especially near nettles and flowering plants.

Adults feed mainly on flower nectar, tree sap, and fermenting fruit; caterpillars eat nettles (Urtica spp.) and related plants.

A fast, territorial flier that often basks with wings open and migrates seasonally in cooler regions. Females lay single eggs on host plants; caterpillars fold or tie leaves into shelters.

Harmless to people and not a significant crop pest. It pollinates flowers and serves as prey for birds and other insect-eating animals.
