Natural Habitat
Sandy, loose, or dry soil sheltered from rain, such as under rocky ledges, at the base of trees, or under human structures.
Diet & Feeding
Carnivorous; feeds primarily on ants and other crawling insects that fall into its funnel-shaped pit.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae dig cone-shaped pits in sand and bury themselves at the bottom with only their jaws exposed, waiting to ambush prey. They create these pits by flicking sand backwards.
Risks & Benefits
Benefits: Natural pest control, as they eat ants and other small insects. Risks: Harmless to humans, though they have pincers that can give a tiny pinch if handled.
