They are primarily nocturnal feeders but can be seen during the day. Many species are flightless and will drop to the ground and play dead (thanatosis) when disturbed.

Generally considered minor garden pests due to leaf-notching; however, they pose no risk to humans and provide a food source for birds and predatory insects.
