Pinacate beetle or stink beetle

Found in arid deserts, dry grasslands, and under rocks or debris in western North America.

Scavengers feeding on decaying organic matter, fungi, and occasionally living plant shoots.

Flightless beetles that exhibit a distinct defensive headstand posture when threatened, releasing a foul-smelling chemical secretion.

Harmless to humans physically and beneficial for breaking down organic matter in desert ecosystems, though their defensive spray causes a strong foul odor.
