Wheel bug (assassin bug)

Gardens, woodlands, and other vegetation; often wanders onto walls, patios, and buildings.

Predatory; pierces and feeds on caterpillars, beetles, and other insects.

A solitary ambush hunter; adults are recognizable by the raised, cogwheel-like crest on the thorax. The photo’s silhouette is consistent with a wheel bug, though the crest is not clearly visible.

Useful for controlling insect pests. It can deliver a very painful defensive bite if handled, but is not considered medically dangerous.
