Brown marmorated stink bug

Native to East Asia and now widespread in North America and Europe, it occupies gardens, orchards, woodland edges, buildings, and other sheltered sites. Adults often overwinter in wall voids, attics, and other structures.

It uses piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, and some trees. Feeding can cause dimpling, discoloration, and internal tissue damage.

Adults are shield-shaped, mottled brown, and produce a strong odor when disturbed or crushed. They aggregate in autumn for overwintering, emerge in spring, and typically produce one or more generations annually depending on climate.

It is a major agricultural and garden pest and can invade homes, though it does not bite or sting people. It has few notable ecosystem benefits in regions where introduced.
