Stag Beetle

Deciduous woodlands, forests, and occasionally gardens near decaying hardwood stumps and logs

Larvae feed on decaying wood and roots underground; adults feed on tree sap, rotting fruit, and nectar

Mostly nocturnal, active during warm summer evenings. Larval stage can last several years underground before pupating and emerging as adults. Males use enlarged mandibles to fight each other for territory and mates.

Harmless to humans as they do not sting and rarely bite unless severely provoked. Ecologically beneficial as larvae help break down dead wood and recycle nutrients back into the soil.
