Flat-backed Millipede

Found in leaf litter, under logs, in damp soil, and occasionally damp indoor areas like basements.

Detritivores; they primarily feed on decaying organic matter, rotting wood, and fungi.

Slow-moving and non-aggressive. They are nocturnal and spend most of their time in moist environments to avoid desiccation. They do not bite or sting.

Benefits: Crucial for nutrient recycling in the ecosystem. Risks: They may secrete a pungent fluid (contains hydrogen cyanide in some species) as a defense mechanism; this can cause mild skin irritation or eye discomfort if handled. They are generally harmless to humans.
