Jewel bug (shield-backed stink bug)

Vegetated habitats in tropical and subtropical regions, especially forest edges, gardens, and crop plants.

Adults and nymphs suck sap from leaves, shoots, flowers, and developing fruits using piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Usually solitary or found in small groups on foliage; adults may fly readily when disturbed. Females lay clusters of eggs, and nymphs pass through several wingless stages before adulthood.

Generally harmless to humans, though some species can damage ornamental plants and crops. They are part of food webs and may serve as prey for birds, spiders, and parasitoids.
