Milkweed bug (likely small milkweed bug)

Open, sunny areas containing milkweed, including meadows, roadsides, gardens, and prairies. It is commonly found directly on milkweed stems, leaves, and seed pods.

Adults and nymphs pierce milkweed seeds and other plant tissues to suck sap. They may also feed opportunistically on small insects or nectar.

Often congregates in groups on milkweed and overwinters as an adult in leaf litter or sheltered vegetation. Its red-and-black coloration advertises chemical protection obtained from milkweed toxins.

Harmless to people and generally causes little significant plant damage. It helps transfer energy through the food web, though large populations can reduce milkweed seed production.
