Large skipper (likely silver-spotted skipper)

Grasslands, meadows, woodland edges, and sunny gardens across much of the Northern Hemisphere. Adults favor nectar-rich flowers and warm, sheltered perches.

Adults drink nectar, especially from purple and yellow flowers; caterpillars feed mainly on grasses, including fescues and bluegrasses.

A fast, darting flyer that often rests with forewings partly raised, as shown. Eggs are laid singly on host grasses; larvae shelter in folded leaves and overwinter before pupating.

Harmless to people and plants as an adult. It contributes to pollination, while caterpillars provide food for birds and other predators; larval feeding causes minor grass damage.
