Parktown prawn (or King Cricket)

Suburban gardens, indigenous forests, and moist areas under rocks or logs, primarily in South Africa.

Omnivorous; they eat garden snails, slugs, other insects, and decaying vegetable matter.

Nocturnal and active year-round. They are well known for their jumping ability and for entering homes. They can eject a foul-smelling liquid from their rear when threatened.

They are harmless to humans but can bite if handled. They are beneficial to gardens as they prey on snails and slugs, though they are often considered a household pest due to their size and jumping habits.
