Woodlouse (sowbug/pillbug)

Moist, sheltered places such as soil, leaf litter, under stones, logs, mulch, and damp buildings. They avoid dry conditions and are mostly nocturnal.

Detritivores that mainly consume decaying leaves, wood, fungi, algae, and other organic debris; they may occasionally graze on tender plant tissue.

They hide in darkness and curl or cluster to conserve moisture; some species can roll into a ball. Females carry developing young in a brood pouch, and individuals molt in stages.

Harmless to people and pets, and they do not bite or sting. They aid decomposition and nutrient recycling, though large numbers can indicate excessive moisture and occasionally damage seedlings.
