Tobacco hornworm

Gardens, fields, woodland edges, and other areas with solanaceous plants, especially in the Americas.

Feeds voraciously on leaves of tobacco, tomato, pepper, and related plants; adults drink nectar.

Caterpillars are usually active at night and hide among foliage by day. Mature larvae burrow into soil to pupate; adults are large, fast-flying moths.

Harmless to people, though it can severely defoliate garden crops. It supports predators and pollinators and is an important food source in ecosystems.
