Larvae consume keratin-containing materials such as wool, fur, feathers, hair, and dead insects; adults mainly feed on pollen and nectar.

Larvae hide in dark, undisturbed areas and may curl into a ball when disturbed. They shed bristly skins and develop through several larval stages before pupating.

They do not bite or transmit disease, but larval hairs can irritate sensitive skin and infestations can damage natural-fiber textiles. They help recycle animal-derived organic matter outdoors.
