Natural Habitat

Native to western North American conifer forests; commonly enters homes and buildings in autumn while seeking shelter.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on seeds and developing cones of conifers, especially pines, firs, and spruces, using piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Behavior Patterns

Recognizable by flattened, leaf-like expansions on the hind legs and a pale zigzag across the wings. Adults overwinter in sheltered places and may produce a noticeable odor when disturbed.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to people and buildings; does not bite or reproduce indoors. Can reduce seed production in conifer plantations, but is generally a minor pest.
