Lesser Emerald Moth

Fields, meadows, gardens, and shrubby areas across North America

Adults feed on flower nectar; larvae (inchworms) feed on flowers and seeds of various composite plants like goldenrod, aster, and ragweed.

The caterpillars (camouflaged loopers) are famous for attaching bits of petals and flower parts to spines on their backs to disguise themselves from predators. Adults are nocturnal and strongly attracted to artificial lights.

Harmless to humans. Provides ecological value as a minor pollinator as an adult and as a prey source for birds and small insectivores. Generally not considered a significant agricultural pest.
