Leaf-footed bug

Gardens, orchards, woodland edges, and buildings, especially around conifers and fruiting plants. Adults often shelter on outdoor furniture or enter structures in cool weather.

Pierces plant tissues with a straw-like beak and sucks sap from developing seeds, cones, fruits, and shoots. It may damage fruits and ornamental plants but usually does not seriously harm mature plants.

Adults are strong fliers and commonly gather in groups; disturbed individuals may release a pungent odor. They overwinter as adults, then mate and lay eggs on host plants in spring.

Harmless to people and pets, though it can be a minor garden or fruit-crop pest. It is part of the food web and may help recycle plant material, but it provides limited direct ecological benefit.
