Drone fly (hoverfly)

Gardens, meadows, farms, and other flower-rich habitats worldwide; larvae develop in nutrient-rich stagnant water.

Adults feed on flower nectar and pollen; larvae consume microorganisms and decaying organic matter in water.

A bee-mimicking hoverfly that often hovers near flowers and visits them for food. Larvae, called rat-tailed maggots, develop in polluted water before pupating.

Harmless to people and does not sting; adults pollinate flowers. Larvae can occur in unsanitary standing water but are not normally a health risk.
