European Paper Wasp

Typically found around human structures like eaves of roofs, attics, and gardens, as well as woodlands and meadows.

Adults feed on nectar and honeydew; they hunt insects, especially caterpillars and flies, to feed their larvae.

Constructs open-comb umbrella-shaped nests from chewed plant fibers (paper). They are semi-social insects with a hierarchical queen-worker system.

Benefits include pest control in gardens. Risks include painful stings if the nest is disturbed; they are generally less aggressive than yellowjackets but will defend their colony.
