Deciduous forests and urban areas with mature trees

Nymphs feed on the sap from tree roots; adults feed sporadically on plant sap and twigs

Spend most of their life as subterranean nymphs for 13 or 17 years. Once emerged, adults sing loudly to attract mates using specialized organs called tymbals.

Generally harmless to humans and beneficial to the ecosystem as a major food source for birds and mammals, though heavy emergence can cause minor damage to young tree branches.
