Usually found under stones, leaf litter, logs, and loose soil; adults may enter buildings while dispersing or seeking shelter.

Mostly seeds, grains, and plant material; some species also eat small insects and other invertebrates.

Primarily nocturnal and fast-moving, with strong legs for running. Adults commonly overwinter in soil or sheltered places and may be attracted to lights.

Harmless to people and not known to infest homes or stored food. Beneficial species consume weed seeds and sometimes pest insects, though certain Harpalus species can occasionally damage seedlings.
