Pipevine swallowtail

Open woodlands, edges, gardens, roadsides, and other sunny areas, especially where pipevines grow.

Adults drink nectar from flowers; caterpillars feed mainly on pipevine plants (Aristolochia species), accumulating defensive toxins.

Adults glide and actively patrol for mates, often visiting flowers and basking with wings open. Several generations may occur annually; the dark caterpillars develop through distinct instars before pupating.

Not dangerous to people; its warning coloration and pipevine-derived toxins deter many predators. Adults are important pollinators, and the species contributes to food webs.
