Natural fibers and keratin-containing materials such as wool, silk, hair, feathers, and dead insects.

Larvae are scavengers that prefer dark areas and can remain in the larval stage for months to years; they leave behind bristly molted skins.

Larvae cause damage to household fabrics and textiles; the bristly hairs on larvae can cause allergic skin reactions or respiratory irritation in humans.
