Natural Habitat

Found in moist, organic-rich environments such as sewage drains, bathroom sink drains, shower drains, toilet bowls, and standing water containing decomposing matter.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on sludge, decay, algae, fungi, bacteria, and organic sediment found inside drain pipes and aquatic detritus.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae develop underwater in slimy films coating pipe walls. They breathe using a small siphoning tube near their tail, clinging to surfaces until pupation, after which they emerge as small, fuzzy winged drain flies.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting and do not transmit human diseases. However, their presence indicates a buildup of organic debris in drains, and large adult populations can become a minor household nuisance.
