Jerusalem cricket (potato bug)

Usually found in dry soils, under rocks, logs, and garden debris in western North America. This individual appears to be sheltering along a wall or pavement edge.

Primarily feeds on roots, tubers, decaying plant matter, and occasionally small insects. It chews rather than bites or sucks fluids.

Mostly nocturnal and solitary; spends much of its life underground and emerges after moisture or disturbance. It is wingless, digs with its enlarged head and jaws, and may drum its abdomen or hiss when threatened.

Generally harmless, though it can deliver a painful defensive bite if handled. It helps aerate and mix soil and contributes to decomposition; significant crop damage is uncommon.
