Natural Habitat

Sandy soil, arid regions, and sheltered areas beneath overhangs or porches where the soil stays dry.

Diet & Feeding

Strictly carnivorous; they primarily eat ants and other small ground-dwelling insects that fall into their pits.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae dig funnel-shaped pits in loose sand and bury themselves at the bottom, leaving only their mandibles exposed. They use their heads to flick sand at escaping prey to knock them back into the pit.

They pose no risk to humans or pets. They are beneficial to the ecosystem as they help control ant populations and other small pests.
