Black soldier fly

Found globally in temperate and tropical regions, often near decaying organic matter or compost.

Larvae eat decaying organic material and manure; adults have no functional mouthparts and survive on fat reserves.

Adults are active during the day and mimic wasps in appearance though they cannot sting. Larvae are voracious decomposers that go through several instars.

Harmless to humans as they do not bite or spread disease; highly beneficial for waste management and as nutrient-rich animal feed.
