Mostly nocturnal and very fast runners; they do not fly. They thrive in humidity above 50% and reproduce rapidly in damp conditions.

They are considered harmless to humans and do not bite or transmit disease; however, they are common nuisance pests that can damage paper products and contaminate starches.
