Nocturnal and slow-moving; known as "waterbugs" because they prefer very moist environments. They have a long life cycle and are less agile than other cockroach species.

Potential risk for spreading food-borne pathogens like E. coli and Salmonella; they also produce allergens that can trigger asthma. They benefit the ecosystem as decomposers by breaking down organic waste.
