Herbivorous; feeds on plant sap from a variety of trees and shrubs, particularly hazel and alder

Active during the day; adults hibernate in leaf litter or buildings during winter. They change color from bright green to bronze-brown in autumn for camouflage during hibernation.

Harmless to humans; can be a minor garden pest but generally considered beneficial as part of the ecosystem's food web. They emit a pungent odor if disturbed.
