Black swallowtail butterfly (likely eastern black swallowtail)

Open, sunny habitats such as meadows, roadsides, gardens, fields, and woodland edges across much of North America.

Caterpillars feed mainly on plants in the carrot family, including parsley, dill, fennel, and wild carrot. Adults drink nectar from flowers.

Adults are strong, gliding fliers and commonly bask with wings spread; they produce multiple generations in warm regions. Caterpillars develop through several stages and overwinter as chrysalises.

Harmless to people and beneficial as a pollinator. Caterpillars may slightly damage herb and vegetable plants, while their warning coloration and osmeterium deter predators.
