Fungus gnat (likely adult)

Moist soil, decaying organic matter, compost, and indoor potted plants; adults often rest on nearby surfaces.

Adults consume little or may feed on liquids; larvae primarily eat fungi, algae, and decaying organic material, sometimes damaging fine plant roots.

Adults are weak fliers and often walk or hover near plants and windows. Larvae develop in damp soil, with several generations possible indoors.

Generally harmless to people and pets. Larvae can stress seedlings and houseplants when abundant, while also contributing to decomposition.
