Rove Beetle

Found worldwide in varied damp habitats including leaf litter, under stones, rotting wood, compost heaps, and occasionally inside homes in dark, damp areas.

Mostly carnivorous and predatory, feeding on other small insects, insect larvae, mites, and decaying organic matter.

Characterized by extremely short elytra (wing covers) exposing much of the abdomen, which they often curl upward defensively when disturbed. They are fast runners and agile flyers.

Benefits include acting as natural predators that control populations of agricultural and household pests like mites and flies. Most are harmless to humans, though some species can secrete a defensive chemical that causes temporary skin irritation.
