Cicada

Trees and shrubs in gardens, forests, and other vegetated areas.

Nymphs feed on xylem sap from plant roots; adults drink sap from woody plants.

Nymphs live underground for years before emerging, molting, and becoming winged adults. Many species produce loud calls, especially during the day.

Harmless to people and not a household pest; mass emergence can stress young trees, while cicadas provide food for wildlife and enrich soil after dying.
